When life throws you lemons…
We all know a new year means resolutions. Whether that is in life or in business. We look forward and set goals with good intentions. Some fail, some flourish. So in true new year fashion, I have decided to sit down and reflect the year past and take a look at what 2016 looks like for me both in and out of the shed…
Looking back over the past 12 months or more, I have come to realise just how important being healthy is on running my business and vice versa. After all, I am my business and my business is me! While I can separate them with a path from house to shed (actually some some random stepping stones I had to throw down to avoid the mud), being the creator and sole component of my business, my life and business are of course interlinked.
At the start of 2015 I set a goal to launch my Stationery Boutique, a place to share and sell my own invitation designs, which would work alongside my existing workflow of bespoke designs and corporate projects. My original plan was to launch in early spring and then was pushed back to later in the year – both of which slipped by…
This was not from lack of passion or a failed plan but purely because my priorities changed.
Let me take you back a little further to 2014… It was a year of highs and lows for me. Business was the busiest it had ever been, I got married in July and bought a house in the same week – some pretty major milestones. But I also got very ill. I didn’t want to share too much about this neither at the time or since, even amongst friends, let alone the rest of the world for fear of appearing weak or even unprofessional. I was totally wiped out but still kept going. I became anxious trying to work out what was wrong with me, to find no specific conclusion.
As 2015 approached, I decided things would take a turn for the better, so turned my focus over to making my dream of launching my own design collections and Stationery Boutique a reality, hence setting my goal and putting it out there to the world in my first blog post of that year. The renewed new year motivation soon slowed down though as I started to find myself getting ill again and my anxiety returned. While I tried to continue my plans towards launching, my goal became less important. My health needed to be my focus.
During the last part of the year, after no success from the Drs, I decided to take a more holistic approach and turned to Kinesiology testing. Long story short, I am now creating a lifestyle to improve my health, through nutrition and supplements, yoga and fitness, mindfulness and trusting my intuition more. For various reasons I now follow a sugar, dairy, gluten, yeast, egg white and alcohol free diet. It’s no where near as bad as it sounds, it’s just a matter of perspective and getting creative in the kitchen. I love experimenting with food and trying out new recipes or creating my own and proving that a restrictive sounding diet is still delicious and knowing that I am working towards a happy, healthier me!

So, as I sit down to write you what 2016 looks like, figure out what is important and decide what goals to start planning, I have come to realise that my health is most certainly still a priority!
Instead of beating myself up about pushing back my plans to launch my boutique, or even forcing myself to commit to a launch date at this present time, I am going to take it easy and enjoy the journey. While I may not have launched it formally in 2015, I did start selling some of my personalised prints, refreshed the design of my website (ta-da), and got lots of preparation done behind the scenes, moving me ever closer to making that dream a reality!

So, yes I am still planning to launch my Stationery Boutique – and yes I am really hoping it is soon so I can share my designs with you! I am working with the lovely Laura from Business B to work out what all that looks like and how to make it happen, taking it one step at a time!
Sometimes life does get in the way, sometimes it has to in order for us to realise how important our health is. My health is crucial to how I run my business and how creative I feel and my business has an impact on my health, so the two have to work well together.
It has been a slow process over the past 18 months, wandering if I would ever feel better, but things are looking up and I am starting to feel so much better now! I am looking forward to continually improving my health, little by little, everyday.
As part of that journey I have decided to let go of my fears of sharing the details of my health, so I have set up a personal blog to open up about the challenges life has thrown my way and how I am dealing with them. I truly hope that by sharing some of my inspirations, recipe creations and the energy I am putting into being well into a blog for the world to read, that it may inspire and help others facing similar challenges.
My first post on my personal blog When Life Throws You Lemons…
So, the moral of the story (and my new blog) is… Sometimes life will throw you lemons… and if you can’t make lemonade (too much sugar in my case) – get creative!
Oh and as for 2016 – lets make it a happy, healthy and successful year how ever that may look for each of us!
Thank you for reading – smile and enjoy your day!
